Will the van der Linde family get another GT superstar after Kelvin? Apparently, yes! Sheldon van der Linde is on the way to emulate his older brother and make the jump to the top of the GT sport!
Recently at the Petit Le Mans, the crowning season for the US IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the 18-year-old South African won his first victory in the GT3 sport.
Together with Christopher Mies and Connor de Phillippi, he won the 10h race in an Audi R8 from Land Motorsport. And he did not win it anyway, van der Linde was on average the fastest GT3 rider in the entire grid. Mies, de Phillippi, Jesse Krohn, Jeroen Bleekemolen, Mario Farnbacher, Michael Christensen and many other top-notch professionals a huge achievement for a Youngster who drove his 3rd GT3 race!
He had his first two GT3 assignments just before. Together with his brother Kelvin he drove for Aust Motorsport on the Sachsenring at the ADAC GT Masters. Sheldon van der Linde also showed a strong performance in the German Championships, especially when he was nominated shortly before, because Kelvin’s co-pilot failed for medical reasons only for a short time.
We could see the duo van der Linde / van der Linde more often in the 2018 season. The two brothers would like to join the ADAC GT Masters in the coming year. Normally, Sheldon van der Linde drove this year for PROsport Competition with an Audi RS3 LMS in the ADAC TCR Germany – with a season victory he became 3rd in the overall evaluation.
He come from a family with the “motorsport gene”. His brother Kelvin van der Linde became champion in the ADAC GT Masters in 2014, won the 24h at the Nürburgring this year and was also 5th in the overall evaluation of the ADAC GT Masters this year. Before that, he qualified as a champion in the VW Scirocco R-Cup in 2013 and became the youngest champion in the history of the series in the Volkswagen Cup South Africa at the age of 16 years and 128 days.
In 2011, he was the youngest starter of all time in the championship at14 years of age.
Etienne van der Linde, the uncle of Kelvin and Sheldon, is also active in motorsports. He also became champion in the Volkswagen Cup South Africa – where he was the youngest champion up to Kelvin – and competed in among others in the German Formula 3 and the Formula 3000 European Championship.
